Sometime after his defeat, Doomsday discovered a way to teleport in between the Earth and the Phantom Zone at will, allowing him to ravage a location and then return to the safety of the Zone.

Doomsday would later be exiled to the Phantom Zone, but appeared sporadically in the material world, eventually breaking free altogether. However, Superman returned and ultimately defeated the beast, afterwards rebuilding Metropolis. Little is known of their confrontation: what is certain is that Doomsday's arrival was heralded by the sky burning red, and when it appeared, it killed Superman and destroyed Metropolis, a day that would be known forever after as 'Doomsday', giving the monster a name. Decades later, the creature would come to Earth, where it would find Superman. These changes have given a fresh layer to Superman’s fight with Doomsday.The creature was unleashed onto Krypton, only to be repelled by Colonel Zod using an ancient Kryptonian warsuit (though Zod later hinted that he created the creature himself to serve as a rallying point to a pacifistic and 'soft' Krypton). Superman’s first fight with Doomsday was about saving the city, and the world and while those were the stakes here, this time Superman had a family to also protect, which inspired him to fight harder. Superman’s new approach to fighting Doomsday reflects the changes the Man of Steel has undergone since their last throw down, namely becoming a family man. Without them, he may have perished again. Finally, Superman had help this time around, from both Lois, who deduced the new Doomsday’s identity and Jon, who ran interference. As a result of Doomsday’s upgrades, Superman realized he would not be able to simply punch his way out of this one–he was going to have to stay a step ahead of Doomsday. First, the new Doomsday is much deadlier than the original, capable of adapting to any type of attack in seconds and thus had powers the original did not, such as flight and heat vision. The original Death of Superman was essentially a slug-fest between the two combatants they literally punched each other to death, and while that is what happens here, there are some critical differences, beyond Superman surviving the encounter. The story was written and illustrated by Dan Jurgens, inked by Brett Breeding, colored by Brad Anderson and lettered by John Workman. Lois brings the bone to Superman, who uses his heat vision to shatter it–restoring Crayton’s humanity and saving Metropolis in the process. Crayton found a bone that had broken off from Doomsday during his original fight with Superman genetic residue from the bone converted Crayton into a new Doomsday. Salvation comes from Lois Lane, who has deduced that the new Doomsday is actually a human, a construction worker named Crayton. Now concerned that history may repeat itself, Superman realizes he will need a miracle to get out of this one. As it and Superman fight their way across Metropolis, the new Doomsday grows wings and develops heat vision these adaptations make it extremely difficult for Superman to keep up.
On the anniversary of Superman’s death, the Man of Steel finds himself face to face with a new, and deadlier, variant of Doomsday. The Superman creative teams needed an epic new story to tell, so the decision was made to kill the Man of Steel and explore the ramifications of a world without a Superman. The show’s producers also intended to have the two marry, and it was decided to postpone the wedding until it happened on television. The creative teams behind the Superman family of titles had every intention of going through with the marriage–that is until the ABC network announced Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. The Death of Superman story came about, ironically, because of his engagement to Lois Lane.
